Prof. P V Aravind (Delft University of Technology, Netherlands) delivered a very interesting talk
entitled "Energy, Renewable Energy & Fuel Cells" at IIMK on 18th
October. According to Prof. Aravind, fuel cells are versatile energy generation
solutions that can use a variety of fuel sources including natural gas, bio-gas
from waste, ... and can thus be a component of the energy generation mix for
the future.
He cautioned, though, that while prototype solutions are ready, it will be three to four years before SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) will be ready for the market. He explained also the work his laboratory is doing in waste management sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. During the Q & A session, and in conversation with students, we explored how IIMK might participate and contribute to his research. We discussed financial modeling, establishment of demonstration sites on campus, and hybrid microgrid solutions incorporating fuel cells. We plan to continue the dialogue when Prof. Aravind revisits IIMK in December and early next year.
